The first time I encountered the Visualboyadvance emulator was when I started my first playthrough of Mother 3. Now I can talk all day about that one week it took my to complete the game, and let me tell you this: the emulator was fantastic. It was able to keep a constant frame-rate, it allowed up to ten save-states (very handy in this particular game), I could fullscreen it and sit back and play in my bed, it even emulated Gamesharks and Action Replays (which I didn't use much, but still very impressive). When my PC eventually went ka-put on me out of complete nowhere, I had to resort to my brother's Macbook and the experience was less than stellar.
It was shameful. Pros: -Frame-rate is constant.Plays every GBA game.Emulates sound perfectly. Cons: -No REAL fullscreen. No save-states.No save battery.Exiting out of fullscreen is like turning the game off.Vital reviewed on January 2, 2012.
I'm lookin to get a game boy in the near future, but am caught between the soon to be released Game Boy Advance SP and the regular GBA. The GBA SP looks pretty cool, and i like the rechargable battery feature, as well as the flip down screen (my old game boy has a cracked screen, maybe this'll prevent another accident). However, the GBA is 30 dollars cheaper, and the flip screen seems a little fragile on the SP.
I figured there's a lot of gamers here, so any pros/cons/what i should do tips would be greatly appreciated. There are good things and bad things about both units. The advance kind of sucks because it really needs a light. The only light i have been able to find that is acceptable is the floodlight, which eats batteries like no ones business. Also, it sucks anyways to have to replace the batteries on the GBA itself, but this has always been the case. The GBA is pretty good about batteries anyways. The SP is a nice unit.
The shoulder buttons are finally in a spot that wont hurt American hands. I really like the flip design. The screen, however, is NOT backlit. It is frontlit.
There is one light on each side of the screen, making 4 lights. From the quicktime movies i have seen, it looks like the lighting is more than sufficient. The fact that you can turn the light off is another good feature.
The one major bad thing about the SP is in fact the rechargeable battery itself. It is not removable. There is no way to get to it. If the lithium ion battery goes bad, you are pretty much SOL and will have to buy a completely new unit. Wherever you buy it, get the extended warranty.
They are always worth it, and more so in this case. I have an advance which i will be giving to my g/f when the SP is released. What a week its going to be.GBSP, then two days later.ZELDA!
